The Town of Eatonville is the oldest municipality in America. It was the first incorporated all-black city, and is one of the most important in African-American history. It is was the home of Zora Neale Hurston, a well known Harlem Renaissance writer best known for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. The Zora Neal Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts is located in Eatonville and hosts a very popular annual festival in her honor. Tucked away just north of the City of Orlando, Eatonville is no longer the backwoods town in a rural area Hurston describes in her books. This cultural gem of a town is home to just a bit over 2,000 people.
